Mehdi Ghouirgate is an Affiliate Professor at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.

He is a Full Professor at the University of Bordeaux-Montaigne since September 2023. He has also been a professor at Sciences Po Bordeaux since 2025.

In addition to a PhD, he holds a Habilitation to direct research obtained at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in 2019.

Mehdi Ghouirgate is a specialist in the history of the Muslim West (Maghreb and al- Andalus) during the medieval and modern periods. He is committed to revisiting this history based on a resolutely multidisciplinary approach that calls upon, among others, anthropology, economics, military history and demography. He is also the author of numerous books and articles published in international journals, mainly in French but also in English and Spanish. He received the award for best biography of the year from the Académie française in 2025. He has also been invited to give courses and conferences in universities in the United States, China and Spain.
