Prior to joining UM6P, he worked as an economist at the Banque de France in Paris, where he contributed to several national and European projects on macro-finance.
His research examines income and wealth inequalities and addresses central macroeconomic questions, such as the social costs of unemployment and the design of effective labor market policies, the role of informality in economic development, and how governments can better respond to recessions. He approaches these issues by combining heterogeneous agent models with microeconomic data from the US, France, and Brazil. His work has been presented at leading international conferences.
He previously served as a teaching assistant at Sciences Po Paris and Panthéon-Sorbonne University, and he now teaches macroeconomics at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels at UM6P.
Mehdi Bartal holds a PhD in Economics from the Paris School of Economics.
