Ana Cristina Alves is an Associate Professor at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.

She holds a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE-UK, 2012). She was previsously Assistant Professor at the School of Social Sciences - Nanyang Technological University (NTU-Singapore, 2014-2021), Senior Researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs (Johannesburg 2010-2014), and assistant lecturer at the School of Political and Social Sciences - Technical University of Lisbon (ISCSP-UTL, Portugal 2000-2010).

Her research sits at the intersection of Foreign Policy, International Political Economy and Development studies, with a focus on China’s economic statecraft in Africa and its impact on the continent’s development and on global development governance. Her recent publications include: ‘China’s economic and trade cooperation zones in Africa: from static model emulation to dynamic learning’ (Area Development and Policy, 2024), and ‘The BRI: A new development cooperation paradigm in the making? Unpacking China’s infrastructure cooperation along the Maritime Silk Road’ (World Development, 2023).
