He has been Professor of Development Economics at the University of Sussex, UK since 2006.
He has many years of experience of teaching development economics to undergraduate and MSc students, and has supervised or co-supervised more than 35 PhD theses. In the 2025-26 Academic Year he will teach half a course of Advanced Applied Development Economics topics for PhD students, and a full course of Development Economics for undergraduates. His research focus covers many areas of development economics, including labour and informality, poverty, trade, agriculture and health, with a geographic focus on Africa, followed by Asia.
Professor Mckay has acted for many years as a resource person for the African Economic Research Consortium, chairing a thematic research group focused on trade and production issues and co-leading a collaborative research project on regional integration. He has been on panels on different themes in the three African Economic Symposia held by the Policy Centre for the New South. He has recently worked closely with African and Asian researchers in projects he led or co-led on female labour issues. He currently acts as Editor in Chief of the Review of Development Economics.
