The African Institute for Research in Economics and Social Sciences (AIRESS), Faculty of Governance, Economics and Social Sciences (FGSES), Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Rabat, is seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Research associate to join the Exploring Market-Based Realities Across Communities in Ethiopia (EMBRACE). It is an interdisciplinary research initiative to study the effects of market integration on social networks, social influence, and health outcomes in Ethiopia.

The Postdoctoral Associate will work closely with Professor and PI Zachary Garfield at UM6P and Co-PI Professor Luke Glowacki at Boston University. We are committed to postdoctoral mentoring and career development. The appointment will involve approximately three-quarters time carrying out and supervising data collection in rural communities in the Omo Valley of Ethiopia. Ideally, the Postdoctoral Associate will be primarily based in Ethiopia and make short trips to Rabat or other locations for training and team building. Applicants must be comfortable working independently in rural field conditions and have significant experience with field methods in challenging environments. This hands-on fieldwork experience is essential for the role. Experience with R, ODK-X, designing quantitative and qualitative data collection methods, multivariate statistics, and social network analysis are beneficial but not required. Knowledge of the peoples and cultures of Ethiopia and/or the Omo Valley is also preferred but not required.

The EMBRACE research program is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary endeavor to advance scientific knowledge, inform development strategies, and benefit African rural communities. It employs a cross-cultural and longitudinal empirical framework to explore the impact of market integration on social networks, social influence, and health outcomes. Key innovations include using a dynamic database for investigating interactions across social and biological dimensions and synthesizing methodologies and theories from diverse disciplines. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to an ambitious research program with significant implications for both social and biological sciences and public policy. Requirements 

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline such as anthropology, sociology, psychology, political science, human biology, or a related field is required at the time of appointment. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in French or Arabic is an advantage but not required.
