Our guest speaker for this seminar is Amaral Eduardo Haddad, Affiliate Professor at the Faculty of Governance, Economics and Social Sciences.

ABSTRACT

The economy of a country is exposed to disruptions caused by natural and man-made disasters. The disruptions caused by these events create serious challenges for the sustainable development of the economy and society. Planners and policymakers often have to rely on the results of the economic consequences of disasters to identify better strategies to improve risk management and implement appropriate resilience tactics (e.g. a better allocation of resources) in order to both maintain the system’s functions during a disaster and to ensure a quick recovery.

To address some of these issues, researchers have developed increasingly sophisticated models of the spatial economic impacts of disasters. This presentation will focus on recent applications of input-output (IO) analysis and computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling, bringing together a cross-section of the state-of-the-art in socio-economic disaster modeling. Many of the applications discussed have been motivated by recent catastrophes and the need to better understand and prepare for future events. Each addresses different methodological challenges, often proposing refinements to conventional methods or innovative new modeling frameworks.
